Job Description

Backend Web Developer

This is an initial Fixed-term Contract (6-12 months) with the view to make it permanent.

Location: Fully Remote (UK)
Salary: £38,000 - £48,000 (DOE)

The role:
We enjoy making the complex simple for our clients. We create websites, campaigns and digital products for professional services clients, arts, fashion, and e-retailers. You’ll be joining an experienced, collaborative team working across a range of client projects, helping to maintain and enhance existing sites as well as build new ones from the ground up.

This role will focus on backend development: solving complex technical challenges, integrating external systems, developing custom plugins, and ensuring our Craft CMS builds are robust, scalable and high-performing.

You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the technical direction of projects, helping shape solutions and supporting the ongoing evolution of our development approach.

It’s important that you can think creatively about problem-solving, challenge approaches where necessary, and take pride in delivering well-structured, maintainable code that supports long-term client relationships.

Required skills:
  • Strong PHP development skills.
  • Experience working with Craft CMS and Craft Commerce.
  • Comfortable developing custom plugins and modules within Craft.
  • Familiarity with integrating third-party APIs and external systems.
  • Experience of version control using Git.
  • Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and ability to work full-stack when required.
  • Ability to write clear, maintainable and well-documented code.

Desired skills:
  • Experience managing hosting environments and deployment workflows.
  • Knowledge of performance optimisation and caching strategies.
  • Familiarity with Composer and modern PHP development practices.
  • Experience with e-commerce functionality within Craft Commerce.

What you’ll be expected to do:
  • Develop and maintain backend systems across a range of Craft CMS and Craft Commerce projects.
  • Build and maintain custom plugins and integrations with external APIs and services.
  • Collaborate with project managers, designers, and front-end developers to deliver technically sound solutions.
  • Support and troubleshoot existing sites, identifying performance, security or architectural improvements.
  • Contribute to the evolution of our development processes and best practices.
  • Participate in internal reviews, team discussions and (virtual) social events.
